Moving with a Piano in Hobart

Why pianos need a specialist crew, and what it costs.

Why specialists

An upright piano weighs 200–350 kg and a grand can exceed 400 kg, with the weight distributed unevenly. Standard trolleys are not rated for it and Hobart's stairs and slopes make improvisation dangerous.

On the day

Grands are lowered onto a padded board, legs and pedal lyre removed, and the case wrapped before being skated out. Uprights are strapped upright and stair-walked with at least three crew.

After the move

Let the instrument acclimatise for two to four weeks in its new room before tuning. Temperature and humidity changes matter more than the move itself.
